Transport Minister Urges Responsibility After Tragic Road Crash

Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has reiterated the collective responsibility of road users in ensuring road safety across the country.

This reminder follows a devastating crash on the N10 at Middelburg in the Eastern Cape on the night of June 2, 2023, which claimed the lives of 15 individuals as reported by SA News.

The collision occurred when a minibus taxi carrying 15 occupants from Cradock collided head-on with an articulated truck while entering Middelburg.

Tragically, all occupants of the taxi, including the driver, nine women, four men, and two children, succumbed to their injuries, while the truck driver was admitted to the hospital.

Expressing deep sadness, Minister Chikunga extended heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives while wishing a swift recovery to the hospitalised individual.

Underscoring an unwavering commitment to road safety, the Minister highlighted ongoing efforts to address the alarming toll on the nation’s roads. These measures include classifying traffic policing as a 24-hour, seven-day responsibility to maximise visibility and implementing stricter measures to curb reckless behaviour among motorists.

Chikunga urged all road users to remain vigilant and comply with traffic regulations, ensuring that their vehicles are roadworthy without exception.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation will thoroughly investigate the crash to determine its root cause, aiming to prevent future tragic incidents.
