Metro applies Level 1 restrictions to save water

The Tshwane metro will implement Level 1 water restrictions starting on Wednesday, October 2.

As stated by Tshwane Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, these restrictions aim to preserve Tshwane’s reservoirs from depletion.

It was highlighted that Rand Water supplies Tshwane with 80 million litres per day, exceeding the city’s allotted limit by 18%.

“Despite the excess water supply, Tshwane is grappling with reservoir challenges due to heightened water consumption by its residents,” Mashigo explained.

Mashigo emphasized the importance for residents and businesses to conserve water to prevent shortages and interruptions.

Tshwane is currently facing a water crisis due to a surge in water consumption over recent weeks, resulting in a significant decline in reservoir storage capacity.

This situation prompted the National Department of Water and Sanitation to instruct municipalities in Gauteng to enforce stricter water restrictions.

“Residents should note that the Level 1 water restrictions, in line with the Water Supply By-laws, remain in effect, and non-compliance may lead to fines or water supply disconnections,” Mashigo cautioned.

Should consumption patterns persist, the city may escalate the water restrictions to Level 2 or higher to protect the distribution network from collapse.

Mashigo outlined that Level 2 restrictions could impact consumers financially through revised water tariffs and potential water supply interruptions.

Mashigo advised ratepayers to adhere to the following Level 1 water restrictions:

– No watering of gardens between 06:00 and 18:00.

– Avoid using hosepipes for cleaning driveways or patios.

– Refrain from washing vehicles with hosepipes.

– No filling or topping up swimming pools or water features.

“Tshwane urges residents to reduce water consumption in compliance with the restrictions, with penalties for violations,” the statement read.
