Meta Launches Threads: Twitter’s Biggest Rival with 5 Million Sign-ups
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has officially launched Threads, a text-based rival to Twitter. The platform received over five million sign-ups within the first few hours of its release. However, its launch in Europe has been postponed due to concerns about data privacy as reported by Jacarandafm.
Threads pose the biggest challenge to Twitter yet, which has faced numerous potential competitors but remains one of the social media’s iconic companies despite its struggles.
The app became available on Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries at 2300 GMT. Prominent figures like Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and Hugh Jackman and media outlets like The Washington Post, Reuters, and The Economist already have active accounts on Threads.

Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO and Facebook founder welcomed users to Threads in his first post and took a playful jab at Elon Musk, their long-standing rival. Zuckerberg expressed his vision of creating a public conversations app with over one billion users, a goal he believes Twitter hasn’t achieved yet.
After the launch, Zuckerberg celebrated reaching over five million sign-ups in the first four hours.
Threads is a spin-off of Instagram, benefiting from its existing user base of over two billion people. By leveraging Musk’s own struggles with Twitter, Zuckerberg aims to establish Threads as the preferred communication channel for celebrities, companies, and politicians.

Analysts believe Threads has significant potential, with just one out of four monthly Instagram users being enough to rival Twitter’s reach. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri emphasised the platform’s intention to foster open and friendly conversations and encouraged users to be kind.
Meta’s Threads has made a strong entry into the market, positioning itself as a competitor to Twitter. Its initial success and connections with Instagram offer promising prospects for the platform’s growth, while users are eager for alternatives to existing social media options.
