McCoy Mrubata & COMPO: Serenading Symphony at Emperors Palace

Renowned saxophonist, flute player, and composer McCoy Mrubata, known for his dedication to nurturing talent and uplifting communities, will grace the stage at Emperors Palace on July 21 alongside the 30-piece Community Philharmonic Orchestra (COMPO).

Expressing his enthusiasm, Mrubata shared, “This is an exciting, history-making moment for me. Throughout my decades-long career, my passion has been to discover and nurture talent. I am thrilled to collaborate with COMPO, whose ethos aligns with mine.”

Having participated in the COMPO North branch launch in 2022, Mrubata has become the orchestra’s patron. Now, they unite on stage to provide classical music enthusiasts and those embarking on a journey of musical discovery with an unforgettable experience.

In 2022, Mrubata collaborated with a few members of COMPO during his double album launch for the Strings Attached Project at Artscape, further strengthening their artistic connection.

Desmond Solomon, COMPO’s director and conductor, expressed their humility, stating, “We are honored to have the esteemed McCoy Mrubata inviting us to stage this one-of-a-kind concert. From humble beginnings, we have been steadily making our mark in grand arenas, and we can confidently say that our journey holds great promise.”

COMPO boasts two branches—one in Cape Town and the other in Johannesburg. In 2022, the Cape Town branch staged concerts at Soweto Theatre and Javett Arts Centre in Pretoria, collaborating with the Johannesburg branch and the Soweto Orchestra (SSM) to celebrate Mandela Month.

Before the momentous night at Emperor’s Palace, COMPO will host workshops for junior and senior orchestras, further enriching their musical prowess.

Solomon eagerly anticipates the performance, exclaiming, “We look forward to sharing our score with the audience, leaving them with melodies to cherish for years to come.”
