Ekurhuleni Mayor Sivuyile Ngodwana Reflects on 100 Days in Office

Executive Mayor Councillor Sivuyile Ngodwana recently completed his first 100 days in office, a milestone he celebrated during a council meeting. In line with his State of the City Address commitments made in April, Ngodwana highlighted his significant accomplishments under his leadership.

Improving waste disposal was a priority for the City of Ekurhuleni, and over the past 100 days, they made considerable progress in stabilising the waste service. Notably, four waste compactors were delivered and are now in operation, with eight more scheduled for delivery by the end of the month. Efforts were also made to enhance landfill sites, making them more user-friendly while actively clearing 100 unlawful dumping sites.

Addressing water security was another area of extensive work, completing one tower and five water reservoirs, all connected to the water network. Five stormwater drainage systems were updated, and six major road projects connecting residential neighbourhoods to essential roads are nearing completion.

Ngodwana expressed the city’s commitment to providing comfort and progress for its residents. They invested over R3 million to renovate the Somhlolo multi-purpose taxi rank in Vosloorus to support this, creating a secure and conducive space for small businesses and commuters.

An important initiative introduced under Ngodwana’s leadership is the Mayoral Outreach Program, Masisebenzeni – People’s Government @Work. This program reflects the dedication to improving service delivery through collaborative efforts. The mayor and his team regularly visit various villages every second Friday, reviewing service delivery levels, identifying areas for intervention, and addressing challenges.

The Masisebenzeni program has already been taken to Thembisa, Katlehong, Daveyton, Tsakane, and Kwa-Thema within the first 100 days, with plans to expand its reach throughout the municipality. Ngodwana expressed his pride in representing a municipality with hardworking civil servants who prioritise the needs of the residents.
