SANCO Joins Comprehensive Investigation into Devastating Marshalltown Fire
Following the tragic Marshalltown fire incident, the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) has added its voice to the growing demand for a comprehensive investigation.
EWN reports that this call for a thorough inquiry is further reinforced by a recent methane gas explosion that caused extensive damage to a major road in the CBD. It resulted in the closure of numerous streets connected to Lillian Ngoyi.
Two days ago, a fire engulfed a five-story building in the city. It claimed 76 lives, with 12 children, and injured over 50 more.

Many bodies recovered from the building were so severely burned that family members could not visually identify them. Out of the 76 fatalities, 62 bodies remain unidentifiable, necessitating DNA testing for their recognition.
Authorities have urged the victims’ families to claim the victims’ bodies and assist in the identification process.
The Usindiso building housed more than 200 residents relocating to temporary shelters in Bez Valley, Hillbrow, and Jeppestown.
Notably, most of the building’s occupants were undocumented foreign nationals, and their legal status in South Africa is uncertain.
