Lona Kruger Feeding Scheme: 29 Years of Impacting Lives in Boksburg

Lona Kruger Feeding Scheme

For nearly three decades, the Lona Kruger Feeding Scheme has been dedicated to improving the lives of children in Boksburg. In 1994, a group of compassionate volunteers established the scheme in response to the dire needs of learners at a local primary school.

The primary objective of the feeding scheme is to provide nutritious meals to these learners daily, currently serving approximately 100 children. Sadly, this meal represents their only sustenance throughout the day for many. Regrettably, due to being an unregistered non-profit organisation, the scheme faces limitations in accommodating more learners. As Hester Vosloo from the scheme explains, it relies solely on donations to sustain its operations.

The feeding scheme recently faced setbacks as it lost four regular donors during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the closure of Boksburg Lake Rotary added to the blow. Despite these challenges, the scheme remains immensely grateful for the steadfast support of Boksburg Lake Rotary throughout its long-standing partnership.

Highlighting the ongoing needs of the feeding scheme, Vosloo stressed the necessity for volunteers who can prepare meals at their homes. Some dedicated ladies who have been part of the scheme since its inception have reluctantly left due to their advanced age, as they used to rotate in preparing food once a month. Therefore, the scheme seeks younger individuals with the love and passion to engage in this meaningful service.

One of the recent initiatives undertaken by the feeding scheme was donating Easter eggs to the enrolled learners courtesy of an anonymous donor. Furthermore, the scheme operates a clothing bank, providing much-needed second-hand clothes to needy families.

As the year ends, each family receives a grocery parcel directly delivered to their homes. The planning for this crucial project begins in July, as the scheme diligently scouts for specials in newspapers and procures the necessary items over the ensuing months to assemble the parcels.

House calls conducted by the scheme reveal some families’ profound poverty and dire circumstances. The delivery of these parcels often evokes tears from the compassionate women involved. It is a poignant reminder that while the scheme can bring some relief, the scope of poverty is vast, and changing the world single-handedly remains an unattainable goal.

To continue their vital work, the feeding scheme urgently needs donations, including non-perishable foods, minced meat, chicken, and other items that can contribute to meal preparation.

If you want to support the feeding scheme or contribute, please contact Hester Vosloo at 011 894 4040 or 073 219 1394.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of these children and families in need.
