Two individuals identified as local sex workers have been sentenced to life in prison by the High Court of South Africa Gauteng Division Johannesburg for their involvement in the murder of a 29-year-old man in Sandton. The court also imposed additional sentences of 15 years for robbery and six months for theft on Refilwe Mokgotlo (29) and Julia Rihlampfu (33), as reported by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane.

The incident took place on April 13, 2019, when Mokgotlo and Rihlampfu traveled from Pretoria to a pub in Fourways in search of clients, according to Mjonondwane. Subsequently, a man engaged their services around 03:00 and accompanied them to his residence in Sandton.

Mjonondwane explained that after an altercation following a meal and intimate interaction with Mokgotlo, the man was strangled to death by her using a charger cable, as revealed by investigating officer Warrant Officer Mojapelo. The lifeless body of the man was later discovered by a family friend at the residence after being alerted by the man’s father who was unable to reach his son.

Video evidence from the complex showcased the man entering his residence with the two women and them later leaving with his house keys. Furthermore, a cellphone cord was found around the man’s neck, along with bank slips on the bed, connecting the accused to the crime scene through fingerprints.

Senior State Advocate Evelyn Moseki highlighted the aggravating circumstances, emphasizing the accused’s lack of remorse and abandonment of the victim. The court echoed the state’s position, noting the duo’s shocking behavior in the aftermath of the crime.

The NPA expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, citing that the sentencing reflects the seriousness of the crime and delivers justice for the victim and his family.
