Gauteng’s MEC for education, Matome Chiloane, has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic reports of two learner suicides in Soshanguve, situated north of Pretoria.

In the first instance, a Grade 10 student was found deceased, having hanged himself in a Soshanguve secure centre dormitory during the lunch hour on Monday, August 7.

According to Steve Mabona, the spokesperson for the department, it has been revealed that this learner had been placed in the juvenile centre roughly two weeks prior and was awaiting trial.

Tragically, in the second incident on the same day, a Grade 9 boy from Kgetsi Ya Tsie secondary school took his own life at his residence.

In response, Chiloane has announced the deployment of a psycho-social support unit to provide necessary assistance in these distressing circumstances.

Chiloane conveyed, “These incidents serve as a grim reminder that the emotional well-being of learners is a shared responsibility, demanding immediate attention from all of us.”

“As we grieve the loss of these young lives, a growing determination emerges to prevent future tragedies, fostering a culture of support, compassion, and understanding. Our condolences extend to the families and school communities affected.”

Chiloane pledged to exert all possible efforts to address the root causes of such heartrending incidents and to offer support to those impacted.

“To obtain immediate assistance and support, learners are strongly urged to reach out to Childline at 116.”

The confidential Childline toll-free helpline operates 24/7.

“Should you wish to identify yourself and seek counseling, you can indicate your preference accordingly,” Chiloane concluded, emphasizing the importance of seeking help when needed.
