Presidency Responds to DA Court Challenge on Lady R Investigative Panel
The Presidency has issued a response to the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) intention to challenge the appointment of Judge Phineas Mojapelo as the head of the Lady R investigative panel tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the docking of the cargo vessel in Simon’s Town in December 2022.
Per SANews, Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya stated that President Cyril Ramaphosa acted within the law when appointing Judge Mojapelo to lead the independent panel. This decision followed careful consideration of balancing the public’s right to information with the state’s obligation to safeguard information that could impact national security or international relations.

Magwenya stressed that the President appointed a judge per the law and was confident that this decision would withstand scrutiny. He also underscored the importance of addressing this matter credibly and expeditiously.
Furthermore, Magwenya pointed out the potential economic damage and diplomatic strain caused by this issue, highlighting the importance of the panel’s work in restoring credibility and trust. He suggested that the DA’s court challenge might undermine the country’s national interests.
The Lady R investigative panel was established to address concerns related to the vessel’s docking and associated issues, seeking to provide a comprehensive and credible investigation into the matter.
