This area was excavated to stop a water leak.

The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has acknowledged that it currently lacks the necessary resources to address the damage caused during the excavation to repair a water leak at the intersection of Cranbourne and Rothsay avenues within the CBD.

Zweli Dlamini, the municipal spokesperson, explained that the primary purpose of the excavation was to address a water leak affecting a pipe with a diameter of 200mm.

In the month of June, the Benoni City Times conducted an on-site visit to the area, discovering an exposed manhole from which water was flowing due to a burst pipe.

An individual who operates a salon and barber shop adjacent to the exposed manhole revealed that the situation had persisted for more than a month, with the manhole remaining uncovered and water continuously gushing out.

Upon revisiting the site, it was noted that the leak itself had been successfully repaired. However, the manhole remained without proper backfilling.

Zweli Dlamini reiterated the CoE’s stance on the matter, indicating that they intend to resolve the issue comprehensively. He confirmed that the CoE plans to undertake the backfilling process, restore the pavement, and ensure the manhole is appropriately covered. These actions are expected to be carried out once a new contractor is appointed to facilitate the necessary repairs.
