In a significant development, the killer of Nomthandazo Poo, Kagiso Thobela, received a 15-year direct imprisonment sentence at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court, bringing a sense of relief to the Poo family.

The tragic incident occurred in March when Thobela assaulted his long-term girlfriend, Nomthandazo Poo, to death and attempted to dismember parts of her body using an electric saw.

The 29-year-old from Geluksdal was also deemed unfit to possess a firearm by the court.

Despite pleading not guilty in his affidavit, read by his lawyer in court, Thobela provided details for the first time about Nomthandazo’s death. He alleged a fight between them, claiming Nomthandazo assaulted him with a stick. To restrain her, he admitted to strangling her until she stopped breathing.

Thobela asserted that he attempted CPR and showered her with water to resuscitate her, but unfortunately, she did not respond. Realising she was dead, he panicked and tried to cut off her body parts for disposal later.

Promptly, he informed friends and family about the incident, expressing his intention to commit suicide.

While the sentencing has brought some closure, Nomthandazo’s mother, Senzeni Poo, expressed dissatisfaction, believing the punishment isn’t sufficient for the years of abuse her daughter endured.

“He only gets a 15-year sentence? I know a lengthy sentence will not bring her back, but it would have offered us solace for losing her in that horrific manner,” she remarked.

Senzeni Poo noted that Thobela showed no remorse during court appearances, questioning his sudden desire to speak to her, which she declined, stating, “What is it that he now wants to tell me that he failed to say when I needed answers after he killed my daughter?”
