Manhunt underway following killing of Hawks officer in Pretoria

The police in Gauteng have launched a search for the killer of a Hawks officer among two suspects still at large following the fatal shootout during an operation in Mamelodi, Pretoria. The incident occurred as Sergeant Leka Maja traced illegal firearms, resulting in a tragic loss of life.

According to Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the officers fatally shot three suspects during the incident in the Lusaka informal settlement. The tactical team approached a shack where they believed high-calibre rifles to be stored, and an exchange of gunfire ensued, leading to the tragic outcome. The team recovered four pistols and three rifles from the scene.

Sergeant Maja served with the Hawks for 14 years and was part of the tactical operations management section. The loss of such a dedicated member has deeply saddened Lieutenant-General Godfrey Lebeya, the national head of the Hawks.

General Fannie Masemola, the national police commissioner, has declared war against criminals who target and kill police officers, vowing to regain the community’s trust in the face of such heinous acts.
