Jukskei Park family endures infrastructure damage

Since 2021, a Jukskei Park family has been grappling with a growing infrastructure crisis that has cost them financially and regarding their property’s structural integrity.

The ordeal for the Petronio family began in February 2022 when the wall in their backyard collapsed. Jesse Petronio explained, “The reason why it collapsed is because of this servitude next door to us where there is water flowing into the Klein Jukskei River. The servitude was blocked by a structure that had been built – incorrectly built and it is not maintained.”

The collapse of the wall resulted from water blockage caused by this structure, leading to flooding in their yard, damage to their property, and substantial financial costs. The Petronio family had to spend around R300,000 to replace the damaged wall, clean their swimming pool, and replace pool and gate motors.

Jesse Petronio expressed his concerns, “I am just worried that in the next five or 10 years to come – would we have enough soil left? Is it gradually going to affect our wall? What are we going to do then?” He also pointed out that the sewer system was not functioning correctly.

Despite their efforts to engage with relevant authorities, including the Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA), the response has not matched the situation’s urgency, prompting the Petronio family to seek assistance through local media.

Bertha Peters-Scheepers, the media spokesperson for the Johannesburg Road Agency, acknowledged the query and promised to provide more information.

The Petronio family’s plight underscores the importance of addressing infrastructure issues promptly to prevent further damage and potential hazards to residents.
