Johannesburg will maintain the water supply during Rand Water's maintenance

Johannesburg will maintain the water supply during Rand Water’s outage. With the water outage officially underway, Johannesburg Water has taken proactive measures to guarantee an uninterrupted water supply. To mitigate water supply disruptions, stationary and roaming water tankers have been strategically deployed to affected areas. The City of Johannesburg reports that the water shutdown aims to proactively address potential infrastructure breakdowns and enhance critical, ageing infrastructure maintenance.

Cllr Jack Sekwaila, MMC of the Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD), has announced that tankers will be at hospitals, clinics, municipal offices, schools, and police stations throughout the shutdown period. In addition, mobile tankers will be available across the city to ensure continued water supply until Joburg Water achieves full restoration.

Johannesburg Water urges residents to show consideration and conservation while collecting water from tankers, emphasising the importance of preserving water for others in need. Nombuso Shabalala, the spokesperson for Joburg Water, has revealed that the shutdown will impact the municipal’s water infrastructure, including various reservoirs, towers, and direct feeds. The shutdown will also affect areas directly supplied by Rand Water, such as Roodepoort, Central, and Soweto. In contrast, the greater Sandton area and Midrand will not experience adverse effects.

Shabalala assures residents that regular updates will be provided throughout the shutdown, informing them about the progress and restoration of water services. The list of Johannesburg Water infrastructure that will be impacted is detailed, covering areas including Roodepoort/Randburg, Central, Ennerdale, Southdale, and Soweto.

These measures by Johannesburg Water aim to minimise the inconvenience caused by the shutdown and ensure that residents can access alternative water sources during this period.
