Johannesburg to Germiston train services are back

Metrorail in Gauteng has officially announced the resumption of Johannesburg to Germiston train services, effective today.

Jacaranda FM reports that this service update comes after a temporary suspension of train services due to the collapse of a steel footbridge that connected Jeppe and Johannesburg, resulting in injuries to two individuals.

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) had recently completed the line recovery. It was conducting test runs when the bridge incident occurred.

Notably, the Germiston to Johannesburg train route is among the 16 priority corridors marked for rebuilding and recovery this financial year.

Lillian Mofokeng, spokesperson for Gauteng Metrorail, confirmed the successful completion of repairs, stating, “The technical and operations teams have confirmed safe passage of trains this afternoon with an empty train set to test the line. Commuter trains are expected to resume operations with effect from Friday morning.”
