Joburg CBD Fire Death Toll Expected to Increase, Warns GP Health MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko
Gauteng Health MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko says the Johannesburg fire death toll will likely rise. The tragic event has already claimed the lives of 77 individuals, including 12 children, and left 50 others injured. EWN reports that Nkomo-Ralehoko disclosed that, as of now, 33 individuals remain hospitalised, all in critical condition. However, some are deemed critical but stable.

However, she also expressed deep concern that the death toll may continue to rise in the coming days. The situation is further compounded by the fact that 62 victims have severe burns, and traditional identification methods are futile against them. The only hope of identifying these individuals now rests on using DNA testing.
In response to this heart-wrenching situation, authorities have extended their support by offering counselling services to the affected families. Nkomo-Ralehoko stressed the importance of providing emotional support during this trying time, ensuring that grieving families can access the necessary resources to cope with their immense loss.
