A major burst pipe caused the water outage in several Johannesburg suburbs at the corner of Bond Street and Elgin Avenue in Ferndale. This caused disruptions to the water supply in Bryanbrink, Ferndale, Strijdom Park, Bryanston Ext 3, Summit, Malanshof, Ruiterhof, and Meadowhurst Sowetan Live.

Johannesburg Water quickly responded to the issue, isolating an outlet at Kensington B reservoir to allow the network to drain and complete repairs. The repairs were finished late the previous night, and teams have since opened valves at the reservoir outlet to restore the water supply.

However, Johannesburg Water has cautioned that customers in high-lying areas may still experience low pressure or no water as the system recovers. Therefore, it is recommended that affected residents check their water pressure and report any issues to Johannesburg Water’s call centre.

Water outages and pipe bursts are common in Johannesburg, where ageing infrastructure and increasing demand for water strain the city’s water supply system. Johannesburg Water has been working on upgrading and repairing its infrastructure to improve the reliability of the water supply.
