Joburg councillors are questioning the validity of the speaker’s sick note after she was spotted attending a sitting in Tshwane, suggesting that her duties were neglected

The decision of the City of Johannesburg Speaker, Colleen Makhubele, to attend a meeting of the Tshwane council on the same day as her council sitting has raised questions from councillors. Makhubele had been off sick since last week, according to City of Johannesburg spokesperson Virgil James as reported by News 24.

Councillors had assumed that Makhubele’s absence was due to ill health, and the chair of chairs, councillor Lloyd Philips, had presided over the Johannesburg sitting on Wednesday.

However, Makhubele was seen in the council gallery at the Tshwane council sitting, which surprised the councillors.

They are concerned that Makhubele has neglected her duties, and if she is faking illness to avoid her responsibilities, it will not be taken lightly.

On day two of the 12th ordinary sitting of the Johannesburg council, councillors raised queries about the event.

Makhubele explained that she was urgently called by the Tshwane Speaker, Mncedi Ndzwanana, to assist in a matter related to Cope, for which she is the contact person at the IEC.

The Tshwane metro’s special sitting collapsed due to a delay and legal advice being sought on the status of Cope councillor Thabang Sefanyetso.

After two former candidates were found unsuitable, the party approved a third candidate, Ofentse Moalusi, for the mayoral position.
