JDA's development bagged another award

JDA’s development bagged another award two days ago. According to the City of Johannesburg, the Westbury Transformation Development Centre was honoured with two prestigious awards at the 2021/2022 Corobrik South African Institute of Architecture Awards. The state-of-the-art facility, implemented by the Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA) on behalf of the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Social Development, has been recognised for its outstanding design and ability to meet the community’s needs.

Designed by the acclaimed Ntsika Architects, the Westbury Transformation Development Centre received the SAIA Award of Merit and the Award of Excellence. These accolades are part of an awards program to promote and acknowledge architectural excellence and generate public awareness and discussions on architectural matters.

The facility, spanning an impressive 5000 square meters, boasts a range of features that cater to various community needs. It serves as an early childhood development centre, offers senior citizens daycare services, sports and recreation facilities for youth and the wider community, and includes vegetable gardens, a bakery, and a sewing room for retail opportunities.

In addition to these amenities, the Westbury Transformation Development Centre encompasses offices, a greenhouse, a multi-purpose sports hall, a laboratory, youth counselling services, a training and clubhouse, and even an underground parking garage.

These recent awards add to the growing list of accolades for the facility. In 2019, it secured the Architectural Design: Mixed Use Architecture award at the Architecture Master Prize awards. The following year, in 2022, the centre achieved global recognition as a finalist in the Completed Buildings: Civic and Community category at the World Architecture Festival.

Mokgema Mongane, the CEO of the JDA, expressed his pride in the facility’s recognition, stating, “This achievement underscores the JDA’s commitment to community-driven, infrastructure-led approaches in planning, designing, and implementing high-quality city infrastructure.”

The Westbury Transformation Development Centre is a testament to the JDA’s dedication to creating exceptional spaces that enhance Johannesburg residents’ lives while garnering well-deserved recognition within the architectural community.
