Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Gwede Mantashe, expressed concerns that the number of illegal miners who died at Virginia Mine in the Free State may be higher than the reported 31. According to SANews, Mantashe made these remarks during his visit to the mine in Welkom following the incident that occurred in May. The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) received a report of the tragic accident over the weekend.

“Illegal miners are… an attack on the economy, it’s a terrible thing to happen but we are here today to confirm and look for ourselves to see what is happening,” stated Mantashe.

He stressed that illegal mining is not legitimate but a criminal operation that often leads to accidents and fatalities. Referring to other incidents, Mantashe mentioned the deaths of 21 illegal miners in Krugersdorp and 17 in Gloria. He predicted the final count at Virginia Mine could exceed the reported number.

Retrieving the bodies of the deceased miners trapped underground poses significant challenges. Mantashe acknowledged the task’s difficulty and highlighted the need for a solution. The Minister mentioned the absence of a direct shaft connection to the affected area and the tunnel’s sealing, complicating rescue efforts. However, he reassured the public that every effort would be made to recover the bodies, even if it took additional time.

Mantashe praised Harmony Gold mining company for its rehabilitation efforts at the mine and the sealing of several shafts. However, the explosion that led to the breach of the sealed shaft disrupted the rehabilitation work and created further challenges.

The Minister urged against illegal mining, underscoring its detrimental impact on lives and the economy. He called for collaboration between the governments of Lesotho and South Africa to address the growing problem of illegal miners crossing the border armed and engaging in dangerous activities. Mantashe emphasised the need for joint efforts to combat this crisis and prevent further casualties.

The tragic incident at Virginia Mine underlines the dangers associated with illegal mining. It highlights the urgency for a coordinated approach to tackle this issue effectively.
