Johannesburg Water makes progress with restoration process but Hursthill reservoirs still critically low
Johannesburg Water’s Commando and Crown Gardens systems, including the Hursthill reservoirs, are making notable progress as efforts continue to restore the water supply in affected areas fully.
Johannesburg Water is progressing well towards fully restoring supply in affected areas.
The external communications officer at Johannesburg Water, Nolwazi Dhlamini, said towers and reservoirs within the Roodepoort and Randburg areas had notably improved capacity. Priority is stabilising both Crown Gardens and Commando (Brixton, Hursthill and Crosby) systems.
The status of Johannesburg Water infrastructure:
Commando system: Hursthill 1 and 2 reservoirs are critically low to empty. Levels at Brixton Reservoir have improved, and the outlet is open at 100%. The Brixton Tower is operating normally.
Crown Gardens system: The reservoir is low, with levels gradually improving. The outlet remains open at 50%, and pumping has been isolated to the tower as reservoir levels are too low to sustain supply to the tower and the reservoir zone simultaneously.

“The tower is currently supplying the tower zone, however, as pumps are isolated, customers in the tower zone will experience low pressure to no water as levels decrease. Once the reservoir has reached a certain capacity, pumps to the tower will resume,” said Dhlamini.
“Customers in lower-lying areas of the reservoir zone are receiving water, while customers in higher-lying areas are affected by lower pressure or no water as systems are gradually recovering.”
Dhlamini said Johannesburg Water provides alternative water supply to customers in the affected areas through mobile tankers. Customers are requested to urgently reduce consumption, which will significantly assist in recovering the affected systems.
Johannesburg Water will update residents on any developments.
