Ramaphosa Inaugurates Huawei’s Innovation Centre in Johannesburg

President Cyril Ramaphosa presided over the official opening of Huawei’s Innovation Centre at its Johannesburg Campus in Woodmead this week. The Centre aims to facilitate advancements in 4IR technologies, benefiting South Africa and other African countries as reported by Hypertext.

During the event, President Ramaphosa was joined by a delegation of government officials, including the Ministers of Small Business Development and Transport, the Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, and the Deputy Director General.

Huawei explains that the Innovation Centre is a platform for collaboration with South African partners, app developers, and SMMEs in the ICT sector. It showcases Huawei’s cutting-edge digital technologies and solutions, such as 5G, cloud, and AI.

Ramaphosa expressed his optimism, stating, “It is our hope that this Innovation Centre will be a catalyst for the launch of new local ICT enterprises, generating employment opportunities and fostering economic growth that supports our national developmental goals.”

Highlighting the broad impact of digital technologies, Ramaphosa cited the launch of South Africa’s first 5G coal mine last year, made possible through a partnership with Huawei and industry stakeholders. He viewed the Innovation Centre as a testament to Huawei’s confidence in the country’s economy and its potential.

The Innovation Centre prioritises knowledge and skills transfer while driving advancements in 4IR technologies. Huawei has initiated local skills development programs, including the LEAP digital talent programme, ICT academies, and Tech4All-DigiSchool projects.

Leo Chen, president of Huawei Sub-Saharan Africa, commended the South African government’s vision for its digital economy, noting that the country has emerged as a role model for the continent and the global stage in fields such as 5G deployment and industrial digital transformation.

Huawei remains committed to contributing to South Africa’s ICT infrastructure development and industry digitiSation by introducing the latest technologies.

As the pomp and circumstance surrounding the unveiling and opening of the Innovation Centre dissipate, the collaboration between the government and Huawei in achieving industry goals, advancing 4IR technologies, and enhancing local skills development will be closely watched.
