National Women’s Day, celebrated annually on August 9, marks a significant chapter in South Africa’s struggle for freedom and equality.

Norma Mbatha, from the forum, said, “on this day in 1956, over 20 000 women from all walks of life marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria.”

Mbatha added that they protested against the oppressive pass laws, a system that severely restricted the movement of black South Africans, especially women.

“Their defiant stance against discrimination and injustice was a landmark moment in the fight for human rights and gender equality.”

The event at Marlboro Hall was not only a tribute to these heroines but also a reminder of the ongoing struggle for gender equality in South Africa.

The gathering brought together women from various backgrounds to celebrate the progress made, and to acknowledge the challenges that still lie ahead.

Through powerful speeches, performances, and discussions, the event highlighted the enduring spirit of women who continue to fight for their rights and freedoms.

Izwi Labantu Forum’s initiative serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, encouraging women to carry forward the legacy of those who came before them.

“This event is a reminder that the fight for equality is far from over, but with unity and determination, women can overcome any obstacle,” Mbatha emphasised.

She elaborated that, as we honour the past, we also look to the future, where the contributions of women will continue to shape a more just and equitable society.
