Homeless in Pretoria Commemorate World Homeless Day with Awareness March

Recently, homeless individuals in Pretoria marked World Homeless Day by organizing an awareness march through the streets of Pretoria CBD.

The Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD), Northern Corridor, further conducted a program at Tshimologo Care Centre in Capital Park on Friday, October 11, in support of the awareness initiative.

The program shed light on the various challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness and aimed to raise awareness and encourage community involvement.

Tshifhiwa Mulaudzi, a 53-year-old resident from Ha Mutsha, Vhenda, shared his personal journey of becoming homeless after being neglected by his siblings following the loss of his parents.

According to Mulaudzi, due to a lack of employment opportunities, he eventually found himself homeless in Johannesburg, despite having family in Tshwane whom he has since lost contact with, except for his second-born son.

Mulaudzi expressed his determination to renew his driver’s license to facilitate his job search while being supported at Youth for Survival in Pretoria.

Departmental Director Emphasizes Homelessness as a Priority

Khanyisile Mathebula, the Departmental Director, stressed that addressing homelessness is a key priority for the Gauteng premier and urged attendees to utilize the services offered by various departments.

Remembrance Mokwena-Ngulele from the University of Pretoria’s Centre for Faith and Community highlighted the collaborative efforts with Tshwane metro, Tshwane Homeless Forum, and Unisa since 2015.

Mokwena-Ngulele mentioned successful initiatives such as the implementation of the Homeless Policy during the 2019 Covid pandemic and the Homeless Count in 2022, with a strategy now submitted to Mayor Dr. Nasiphi Moya for action.

The event’s primary objectives include raising awareness, fostering community engagement, and providing necessary resources to those in need.
