Since its opening on March 6 at Menlyn Park shopping centre, Home Affairs Menlyn has accumulated a significant number of uncollected IDs.

Menlyn office manager Harold Mathebula expressed concern over the situation, stating the importance of reducing uncollected documents leading up to the 2024 elections.

To improve the process, the office will extend its operating hours and open for three Saturdays, from July 29 to August 12. During these Saturdays, the office will operate from 08:00 to 13:00, specifically for collections, offering a convenient service for clients who cannot visit during the week.

The Menlyn Park shopping centre Home Affairs office provides smart IDs and passport application and collection services.

Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, had previously emphasised that service is by appointment only, with walk-ins admitted only to book an appointment. Menlyn Home Affairs opened to relieve pressure from high-volume offices like Byron’s Place in the CBD, Mamelodi, and Centurion.

The department agreed with the shopping centre, exempting them from paying rent for five years.

Home Affairs spokesperson Siya Qoza stated that the office is committed to making home affairs services more accessible to the public.

In preparation for the forthcoming elections, the Electoral Commission (IEC) is planning voter registration drives for November. On the weekend of November 18 and 19, approximately 24,000 voting stations will open to register new voters and facilitate roll inspection.

For those with internet access, voter registration, inspection, and updating of details can be done at any time before the proclamation of the elections by visiting www.elections.org.za.
