Heinrich Hamm, an Afrikaans teacher and head of department at Hoërskool Birchleigh, tragically lost his life while cycling in Bapsfontein.

Accompanied by his brother-in-law and nephew, they cycled on a familiar route when four men in a Toyota Avanza approached them.

Shots were fired at Carlo, Heinrich’s nephew, prompting a swift response from Heinrich, who attempted to distract the armed assailant.

Despite the distraction, Heinrich was shot and declared dead on the scene, leaving behind his wife, Monique.

While running for help, Carlo encountered fellow cyclists who rushed to the scene and called for medical assistance.

District communications officer Captain Neldah Sekgobela confirmed the incident, stating that EMPD officers arrested three suspects. In contrast, the fourth suspect remains at large.

The suspects were allegedly using the Avanza to transport stolen bicycles, raising concerns about their involvement in other armed robberies targeting cyclists.

The incident has prompted increased patrols by EMPD, SAPS, and local security companies along the cycling route.

The suspects are remanded in custody at Olifantsfontein Police Station on murder charges.
