A tragic head-on collision occurred on the N2 near Fairbreeze, north of Durban, on Wednesday afternoon. IPSS Medical Rescue responded to the scene. They confirmed that the driver and one passenger of the bakkie died. A third passenger survived with moderate injuries. The truck driver and passenger suffered minor injuries.

Rising Concerns and Road Safety Measures

This tragic accident comes as Durban prepares for the busy festive season. The city faces increased traffic and accident risks. In response, eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba launched the Festive Season Management Plan. He emphasized the importance of road safety. “Road safety is key to a peaceful and safe holiday season,” said Xaba.

The plan aims to tackle reckless driving and drinking and driving. It includes increased law enforcement throughout the city. “Our officers will clamp down on all dangerous driving,” Xaba stated.

As part of the campaign, the city will deploy 500 new Metro Police officers. More than 170 high-performance vehicles will patrol Durban’s streets 24/7. Specialized units on horseback and bicycles will focus on high-risk areas, including popular tourist spots. Additionally, the city will use advanced CCTV systems to enhance surveillance and prevent accidents.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, urged drivers to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy. “Check that your registration plates are in place and your vehicle is safe to drive,” he said. He also warned that drinking and driving would not be tolerated. “Our officers will strictly enforce the law,” he added.

With the holidays approaching, it’s essential for all drivers to remain cautious on the roads. Authorities are taking action to reduce accidents and ensure public safety. Motorists must ensure their vehicles are in good condition, avoid dangerous behaviors, and follow the law. Only through collective effort can we make the roads safer and reduce fatalities.
