The Hawks, South Africa’s Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, arrested three Mozambican nationals in Cleveland, Gauteng, following a major anti-drug operation. A substantial quantity of crystal methamphetamine, valued at approximately R1.3 million, was seized during the operation.

Details of the Arrest

Captain Lloyd Ramovha, the Hawks’ Gauteng spokesperson, said the operation was part of a coordinated effort targeting drug trafficking in the Cleveland precinct. The investigation involved the Johannesburg Serious Organised Crime Unit, the South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau, and the Trafficking in Persons Unit.

Acting on intelligence, law enforcement tracked a gold Toyota Avensis linked to drug activities. After locating the vehicle in Kensington, officers conducted a search. Although an initial inspection of a hidden compartment behind the rear seats yielded no results, further checks in the trunk uncovered five containers filled with crystal meth, weighing five kilograms.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Alexandre Alberto Chissano (62), Raul Silvadore Homo (51), and Antonio Lisboa (33). All three are Mozambican nationals.

The trio appeared in the Johannesburg Regional Court on Wednesday, charged under the Drugs and Drug Trafficking Act. The case was postponed to December 11, pending further investigation. The seized vehicle has also been impounded as evidence.

Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, Gauteng’s head of the Hawks, emphasized the department’s commitment to disrupting organized crime. He issued a stern warning to drug traffickers, highlighting ongoing efforts to dismantle illicit operations across the province.

“The Gauteng Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation remains steadfast in its mission to disrupt and dismantle criminal activities,” said Kadwa.
