In a significant development, the Hawks arrested five cops and two civilians concerning an armed robbery where perpetrators robbed a Johannesburg businesswoman of R83,000.

News24 reports that the arrests are part of an ongoing investigation into the robbery on 14 June in Malvern, east of Johannesburg, as confirmed by Hawks spokesperson Colonel Philani Nkwalase.

The suspects coerced the victim into opening her banking app to withdraw R200,000 from her business account. However, due to the bank’s refusal to release the funds immediately, the suspects accompanied her to the bank, where she withdrew some money from her savings. They also coerced her into obtaining additional funds from her relatives. The businesswoman suffered a loss of approximately R83,000 during the ordeal.

The seven apprehended suspects, aged 25 to 42, are set to appear in the Johannesburg Central Magistrate’s Court to face corruption, armed robbery, and kidnapping charges on Wednesday.

Colonel Nkwalase assured the public that the Hawks team is actively pursuing the remaining suspects, demonstrating their commitment to ensuring serving justice in this case.
