Hawks Nab Two Men in R15 Million Brakpan Gold Bust
The Hawks arrested two men in Brakpan for smuggling gold worth R15 million. The suspects, a 33-year-old Zimbabwean and a 20-year-old South African, were caught with six gold bars.
Key Details of the Arrest
The Hawks launched a planned operation at Helderwyk Estate on Tuesday. Their team stopped the suspects while they tried to sell the gold. Officers also seized a Mercedes Benz SUV during the arrest.
“The gold, valued at R15 million, highlights the severity of this crime,” said Captain Lloyd Ramovha, the Hawks’ Gauteng spokesperson.
Criminal Charges and Investigation
The suspects face charges for illegal possession of gold and violations of the Precious Metals Act. After appearing in court on Wednesday, they were remanded in custody.
The Hawks are investigating the source of the gold. They are also working to identify other individuals involved in the smuggling operation.

Brigadier Paulina Sekgobela, acting head of the Hawks in Gauteng, praised the team for their dedication. “We are committed to protecting South Africa’s resources,” she said.
