Another Grindr Gang Attack Reported in Soweto
A 23-year-old man named Tsietsi Cetele in Soweto has become the latest target of criminals who prey on queer individuals using dating apps like Grindr, as reported by Mambaonline.
Cetele had arranged to meet someone he interacted with on Grindr at the Jabulani Shell Garage in Soweto. During the meeting, the man suggested taking a walk, and that’s when Cetele was ambushed from behind by two armed men. They dragged him into a bush, where he was brutally assaulted and robbed of his belongings.

Cetele recounted the harrowing experience, stating that the attackers demanded access to his phone and bank account, resorting to violence when he refused. Fortunately, the men fled when they heard someone approaching, giving Cetele a chance to report the incident to the police, leading to a robbery case with a firearm being opened.
The article highlights the concerning trend of criminals targeting queer men on dating apps in Johannesburg and Cape Town. These victims are often lured to meet other men, only to be subjected to beatings, threats, and robberies. Some arrests were made in the past, raising hopes that such attacks would cease, but unfortunately, the crimes persist.
A 24-year-old victim faced a traumatic ordeal in March, enduring physical abuse and threats of castration until he gave the attackers access to his bank account, resulting in the loss of R28,000.
Despite these incidents, many cases go unreported due to stigma and shame surrounding dating app usage, especially among victims who may be closeted.
The article warns the LGBTIQ+ community to exercise extreme caution when using dating apps, considering the risks involved.
