Greater Springs faces a planned power outage

Greater Springs faces a planned power outage set to commence on July 3 at 08:00 and last until July 9 at midnight. The outage is necessary due to urgent maintenance at the Springs JVA substation in Geduld, which suffered significant damage in a fire incident last November. This scheduled interruption will primarily impact industrial areas, specifically targeting those classified as large power users (LPUs).

The Gauteng Chamber of Commerce and Industry has confirmed that the industries were informed about this planned outage as early as January, ensuring ample preparation time. After subsequent negotiations, the various parties reached a unanimous decision regarding the agreed-upon dates for the outage.

Barbara-Ann Day, the chamber manager, stressed the critical state of the JVA substation, stating, “The JVA substation is in a precarious state. We were advised that should these repairs not take place, the next incident could take much longer to restore, costing the industry more money and longer days to repair than what is on the table.” Clr Thulani Simelane echoed the sentiment, assuring all parties affected had a voice during the negotiations.

The chamber commended the efforts of the stakeholders from the metro for their active participation and collaboration throughout the negotiation process. However, as the outage approaches, the metro urges residents to exercise caution and vigilance, emphasising that electrical networks should always be treated as live.

Numerous businesses in the area will be affected by the power outage, including PFG, Maksal Tubes, Huhtamaki, Kellogg’s, Mpact, Saint-Gobain Isover, Fulcrum, Gold Street, several companies on Vlakfontein Road, Vereeniging Refractories, and others. The Springs Advertiser contacted the municipality to inquire about potential concerns in residential areas. But it has received no response thus far.

As the project progresses, communication regarding the restoration time will be relayed to the public. Residents are advised to stay informed and remain patient as new information becomes available.
