Amid a tragic incident in Thokoza, a Grade 6 boy committed suicide, raising concerns about bullying allegations at Khehlekile Primary School in Thokoza, Gauteng.

The Citizen reports that the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) reported that the Grade 6 learner was found dead in a bathroom at home in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni. The learner was discovered hanging at his family’s residence. This discovery led to an internal investigation into the allegations of bullying at the school. The police are also probing the student’s death.

The GDE has deployed its psycho-social support team and officials from the Gauteng Department of Social Development. They began offering counselling services on Tuesday, and support will continue as needed.

In a separate incident, the GDE became aware of a viral video on Tuesday showing learners from President High School in Ridgeway allegedly bunking class. The school had received a concerning call from a resident in Lion Ridge Complex, reporting that President High School learners were allegedly skipping class at a house in the complex.

Officials from the school promptly visited the complex, and security personnel informed them that the Mondeor Police had already collected the learners. The GDE initiated an investigation and will hold a disciplinary hearing for all affected learners.
