Beandri Booysen Recovers from Open-Heart Surgery
Beandri Booysen, a well-loved progeria patient from Doornpoort, recently underwent her tenth surgery, this time an open-heart operation. Her parents, Pieter and Bea, shared with Rekord the challenges they faced following the procedure.
Beandri, aged 18, underwent the open-heart surgery on October 10th at a Johannesburg hospital after being diagnosed with aortastenosis, a condition where the aortic valve narrows, making it difficult for blood to flow from the heart to the rest of the body.
Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome
Beandri was diagnosed with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria as a baby, a rare genetic disorder causing accelerated aging. The Progeria Research Foundation reports 151 cases globally, with affected individuals carrying a specific mutation in the LMNA gene.
Bea expressed her admiration for Beandri’s resilience, describing her as the pillar of their family. Despite facing multiple challenges, Beandri remains strong, citing her unwavering faith as a source of strength.
Recovery and Support
Post-surgery, Beandri was transferred to the intensive care unit for cardiac patients. Her parents received positive updates on her progress, with doctors noting an improvement beyond expectations.
As Beandri continues her recovery, her family remains hopeful for her improved health, planning a vacation once she fully recuperates. Despite setbacks, Beandri pursued education in Child Daycare, Child Psychology, and Life Coaching, showcasing her determination and positivity.
Community Support
The Booysen family, currently residing near the hospital, appreciates the care provided by the medical staff. Acknowledging the financial strain of medical expenses, they initiated a fundraising campaign to assist with unforeseen costs, garnering support from the community.
With contributions pouring in, the family remains grateful for the outpouring of support during this challenging time. Beandri’s journey serves as an inspiration, highlighting the importance of resilience and community solidarity in overcoming adversity.
