Gauteng Police Confiscate Rifles and Ammunition Connected to N12 CIT Heist

In an intelligence-driven operation aimed at apprehending suspects related to the N12 cash-in-transit (CIT) heist near Southgate, Johannesburg, close to Xavier on October 7, Gauteng police successfully located and secured two rifles, including an AK-47, along with magazines and 71 rounds of ammunition. The operation led them to a backroom in Mapetla, Soweto, where the seized items were discovered. These firearms have been sent for ballistics testing to establish any potential connections to other CIT incidents and associated robberies.

SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe stated that during the operation, law enforcement also confiscated various items, including balaclavas, handcuffs, beanies, protective shoes, and cash receipt slips of bank deposits. The investigation and pursuit of the suspects, believed to be a group numbering between 15 and 20, are ongoing and involve multiple units, such as the Anti-Gang Unit, Organised Crime Investigations, and Gauteng Highway Patrol.

Mathe took the opportunity to remind the public that looting money from CIT crime scenes is a criminal act, and those caught in the act can face theft charges and obstructing justice.
