Gauteng municipal accountant paid for not doing any work

The Democratic Alliance (DA) demands an urgent investigation into a case involving a Gauteng municipal accountant at the Emfuleni Local Municipality. The DA claims this senior accountant received an annual salary of R784,212 for four years without working, totalling over R3 million since 2019. MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) in Gauteng, Mzi Khumalo, revealed this information in response to questions raised by the DA. It appears that the municipal manager was unaware of the situation, further highlighting issues with oversight and skills auditing within the municipality.

The DA calls for accountability and a thorough investigation into this case to ensure the effective use of municipal funds and service delivery improves. It remains to be seen how the Emfuleni Local Municipality will address this alleged misconduct.
