The Gauteng Department of Human Settlements has launched a campaign to tackle land invaders in Allendale, north of Johannesburg, putting them on notice. Together with the City of Johannesburg, the department demolished unlawfully constructed buildings on government-owned land today, as per Jacaranda FM.

Legal action was taken in 2017 when the city obtained a court interdict against these land invasions. Department spokesperson Tahir Sema affirmed that immediate court action will be taken against anyone contesting the evictions. He warned the public against illegal land invasions, highlighting the risk of losing investments during evictions.

Sema reiterated the government’s commitment to evicting land and property invaders, urging communities to report such activities to local authorities. Concerns over hijacked buildings in the Joburg CBD escalated last year after a series of fires ravaged these neglected structures. One tragic incident occurred in August when a fire engulfed the abandoned Usindiso Building in Marshalltown, claiming the lives of over 70 people.
