Gauteng Government’s Warning to Unregistered Initiation Schools
In an effort to curb fatalities and injuries during initiation ceremonies, the South African government initiated a national oversight committee earlier in 2023, mandating the registration of all initiation schools, as reported by Eyewitness News.

The Gauteng government now warns unregistered schools of potential imprisonment, urging compliance. With only 80 applications received, the government extended the registration deadline to November 24.
The national committee seeks to enhance safety and reduce harm during customary initiation practices, emphasising the need for collaboration among departments, law enforcement, and traditional leaders to prevent unnecessary tragedies.
