Gauteng businesses and homes will have prepaid electricity

Gauteng businesses and homes will have prepaid electricity meters installed by the start of January next year as part of the provincial government’s strategy to address residents’ concerns about high electricity bills. As per EWN, this decision was announced by Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi during an energy-focused event in Midrand on Friday, where experts gathered to discuss the region’s energy crisis.

Lesufi highlighted the predicament of residents receiving hefty monthly bills, even when no one is home, amounting to R7000. The switch to prepaid electricity meters is a solution to counter such situations, allowing individuals to purchase electricity based on their actual consumption.

The move towards prepaid meters is part of a larger effort to improve billing accuracy and transparency. During the event, Lesufi reinforced the government’s commitment to ending load shedding by February of the following year. He disclosed that 85 companies have already expressed their readiness to contribute towards resolving the energy challenges.

The mandate for prepaid electricity meters signifies a significant step towards creating a more equitable billing structure that reflects usage patterns while mitigating unexpected and excessive charges. By introducing prepaid systems, Gauteng aims to empower residents and businesses with greater control over their electricity expenses, promoting a fairer energy distribution framework.
