Frustration Mounts as Road Project in Kempton Park Continues

Business owners along West Street in Kempton Park find themselves increasingly frustrated by the ongoing road construction project at their doorstep. The abrupt commencement of this project took them by surprise, as city workers began cutting tires and excavating the pavement in front of their establishments without prior notice or communication.

Waldo van de Walt, the owner of M.Pro Car Clinic, expressed his concerns, particularly regarding the security of his workshop during the project’s initiation. He questioned the wisdom of initiating digging activities over a weekend when security personnel and even business owners could not access their premises.

Van de Walt’s business relies on a hand-to-mouth operation, with every bit of income making a crucial difference to both his business and the livelihoods of his employees. The disruption caused by the construction has left many of his customers frustrated and unable to retrieve their repaired vehicles, leading to a potential loss of income.

Another business owner, Shelli-Anne van Vuuren, shared the challenges her customers face, who struggle to access her shop and find suitable parking, resulting in order cancellations. She also highlighted the security concerns from the nearby cemetery, which attracts criminal activity and drug addicts.

The frustration is further compounded by the extensive nature of the construction work, which has disrupted access and created a potential loss of income for these business owners. They expressed their disappointment in the municipality for failing to inform them about the project in advance. They stressed the importance of receiving clear answers and guidance regarding the project timeline, as they have witnessed similar endeavours lasting for weeks and even months.

Despite reaching out to the City of Ekurhuleni with an inquiry on September 18 and requesting a response by September 21, the Kempton Express received no comment from the municipality at the time of publication. The business owners’ concerns remain unaddressed, leaving them in a state of uncertainty and frustration.
