Four electricians mistaken for cable thieves killed

Four electricians, contracted by the Ekurhuleni municipality to attend to a power outage, were attacked by a mob who took them for cable thieves. As reported by SowetanLIVE, on Monday, 6 March 2023, the incident occurred in Sarel Hattingh Street, Klippoortjie AH, Germiston. Despite showing the angry community members proof that they were there to attend to an electrical issue, the employees were assaulted and later killed.

The police and the Ekurhuleni metropolitan police department are investigating the matter. Municipal spokesperson Zweli Dlamini only became aware of the incident on Thursday after a political party sent out a statement about the incident. The city urged political parties to refrain from sharing information still subject to investigation and pleaded with communities to refrain from engaging in acts of violence and vigilante justice.
