A former teacher appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court at Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Services. IOL reports that his appearance is connected with a series of incidents at an elite all-girls school in Pretoria. The charges include:

  • rape,
  • sexual assault, and
  • sexual grooming of a learner six years ago.

The 34-year-old man’s name is unavailable to protect the victim. He received R100,000 bail.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the incidents occurred when the girl was in Grade 5 at St Mary’s Diocesan School for Girls in Pretoria between 2017 and 2018. She was molested during swimming lessons and extra classes. The learner only realised the wrongdoing in 2019, during sexual offence classes.

Following self-harm and consultation with a social worker, the incidents were reported to the police. The former teacher, claiming no prior cases and voluntary surrender to the police, sought bail. However, the State opposed it, citing flight risk due to a lack of assets and unemployment.

The court granted bail with strict conditions, including reporting to the police and surrendering travel documents. The case will return to court next month.
