Ramaphosa informal settlement

A devastating fire ravaged the Ramaphosa informal settlement late on April 27, leaving thirty-three families homeless and in desperate need of assistance. The blaze, which occurred near Elsburg Road, destroyed eight homes and all belongings of the affected families.

Lindiwe Dlomo, one of the residents impacted by the fire, recounted how the flames erupted around 20:00, allegedly started by a neighbour under the influence of substances using a paraffin stove. Despite residents’ efforts to control the fire, it quickly escalated beyond their control until Ekurhuleni firefighters arrived to extinguish it.

In the aftermath, Dlomo expressed the profound loss experienced by the community, including vital documents, school items, and personal possessions. William Ntladi, Ekurhuleni’s DEMS spokesperson, confirmed the destruction of several shacks, with firefighters managing to contain the blaze without any casualties.

Ward Clr Tsotang Motloung acknowledged the severity of the situation and rallied community support, securing food, shelter, and clothing donations for the affected families. While temporary housing arrangements exist, Thusang Community Development NPO has also contributed clothes and school uniforms to aid the families.

Thembile Mitshintshi and Zwelithini (Small) Sibisi coordinate relief efforts and accept donations to support the affected families. The ward councillor has also outlined essential fire prevention tips, emphasising measures such as maintaining distance between shacks, vigilance with open flames, and prompt reporting of fire incidents to emergency services.
