A female hitchhiker escaped armed kidnappers in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, earlier today. The traumatised woman had been hiking when a silver Polo pulled up near the Middelburg Hospital bend, offering her a lift. Seemingly innocently, she entered the vehicle, but as it began to move, one of the occupants brandished a firearm, demanding her personal belongings. Thinking quickly, when the car slowed near the hospital bend, she took a daring leap from the moving car, sustaining abrasions to her face in the process.

Her luck turned when a passing motorist travelling from eMalahleni to Middelburg stopped to help. The Good Samaritan immediately contacted both emergency services and the police, who swiftly arrived at the scene. Though offered ambulance services, the woman declined, visiting the hospital independently. A man later came to her aid, accompanying her to the hospital.

Remarkably, her injuries were not severe, mainly abrasions on her face and palms. She chose not to reveal her identity to the Middelburg Observer. Authorities have launched a search for the silver Polo on major routes around Middelburg, as the woman remains unable to identify her attackers.
