Father and son strengthen bond through angling adventures
Henry Floor and his son, Rikus, have found a unique way to bond as father and son – through the activity of angling.
Henry shared that his passion for fishing began during his school days in Heilbron, Free State province, where he and his friends used to catch platannas (frogs) and crabs to sell to local fishermen. This led to an invitation to join a fishing club as juniors, where they embarked on a journey of learning about fishing from senior members.
In January 2022, Henry and Rikus became members of the Visarend Angling Club in Alberton, with Rikus starting at the age of 12, the appropriate age for independent fishing. However, Rikus initially struggled with casting, prompting his father to provide guidance and teaching to improve his skills.
Under Henry’s guidance, Rikus significantly enhanced his casting abilities, progressing from casting distances below 40m to consistently achieving over 80m with both rods.
Expressing his dedication to improvement, Rikus even requested nighttime casting practice, suggesting that he be blindfolded to enhance his skills further.
Henry emphasized that participating in the club’s monthly competitions offers them a chance to escape the city’s hustle and bustle, school commitments, and screens, allowing them to enjoy quality time together in the serene beauty of nature.
Whether fishing, admiring the sunrise and sunset, or witnessing storms on the horizon, Henry and Rikus cherish the moments spent together bonding as father and son in the outdoors.
