Mother Assaulted by Family for Refusing to Withdraw Daughter’s Rape Case Against Boyfriend

A 36-year-old woman endured assault from her 54-year-old mother and 21-year-old brother after she declined to withdraw her daughter’s rape case against her boyfriend. He was convicted of the rape of their 11-month-old child. He appeared in court, receiving two life terms. The mother and son faced charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm at the Atteridgeville magistrate’s court on Tuesday, March 12.

NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana provided details, stating the woman’s boyfriend’s sentence. Allegedly, on March 8 last year, the woman visited her sister in Mooiplaas informal settlements to share the case outcome. Returning from buying crisps at a spaza shop, she found her mother outside her sister’s shack. Learning of the case, the mother assaulted the victim verbally and physically. The victim’s brother joined in, striking her.

She fled to the police station, leading to the arrest of her mother and brother on March 9. Their case was adjourned to Thursday, March 14, for a bail investigation.
