A fake doctor in police custody recently escaped in Pretoria, and local law enforcement is currently on a mission to rearrest him. The man, known as ‘Dr Kingsley Leeto Chele’ or ‘Dr KJ Ncube,’ was pretending to be a doctor or pharmacist and used this guise to scam women. According to Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, the suspect engaged in fraudulent activities targeting women, presenting himself as a health professional seeking investors on Facebook. His schemes led to substantial monetary losses for his victims, with many falling for nonexistent projects.

Masondo further explained the police arrested Chele on October 2 on two counts of fraud, which were initially reported in Sunnyside and Klipgat back in June. He appeared before the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court. His bail was denied. He was to remain in custody until his scheduled court appearance on October 17. But Chele managed to escape from the police while they were cataloguing his belongings. He has evaded the authorities since then.

In response to his escape, the police swiftly seized some of his assets, believing they were acquired as proceeds of his fraudulent activities. These assets, along with a 2023 VW Golf GTI, were retrieved by the police’s asset forfeiture unit. The authorities have now opened a case related to his escape from lawful custody, which SAPS Honeydew is investigating.

The police are seeking information from the public to aid in the rearrest of the fake doctor. Those with relevant information have been encouraged to contact the investigating officer, Captain MS Motolla, at 082 715 9583 or the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111.
