Eskom CEO search

The Eskom CEO search continues as the power utility seeks a new leader following the departure of former CEO Andre de Ruyter earlier this year. In a recent media briefing, Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa provided an update on the CEO appointment process. He indicated that Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan, may provide further details regarding this crucial appointment.

During the global search for candidates, the government initially received 147 applications. Still, the Board only recommended one candidate after the selection process. However, the government, referred to as the Shareholder, did not concur with this recommendation, citing that it did not fully align with the provisions of the Memorandum of Incorporation (MOI) Section 14.3.2.

According to reports, the MOI requires the submission of three appointable candidates, and the Board had initially presented only one. As a result, the Board’s Governance and Strategy Committee now has to identify a suitable CEO for Eskom. Eskom will make an official announcement once this process reaches its conclusion, according to Ramokgopa.

Eskom has been without a permanent CEO for nearly seven months, with Calib Cassim as the acting group CEO. Cassim recently stated that he has not applied for the CEO position and is discussing extending his contract as Eskom’s CFO, highlighting that there is still significant work to be done in his current role.
