Eric Holdtman Service Centre Operating Normally Despite Uncertainty
The Brakpan Herald received distressing calls on Tuesday morning from concerned residents about the fate of the Eric Holdtman Service Centre in the Tweedy Park Complex.
The uncertainty arose from the dissolution of the centre’s board, raising fears that it might permanently close.

Motsamai Motlhaolwa, communications director for the Gauteng Department of Social Development, clarified that the board was dissolved on July 31 due to its failure to form a quorum as required by the organisation’s constitution.
Motlhaolwa confirmed that a new board would be appointed after completing the organisational and departmental guidelines for nominating board members, a process that may take up to 90 days.
While awaiting the appointment of the new board, the department will continue to support and supervise services at the centre.
Regarding the staff and security services, Motlhaolwa clarified that staff members would not be replaced as the organisation still employs them. However, the security services, terminated by the board, are in the process of being replaced by a new service provider.
A recent visit to the centre by the Herald revealed that it is currently operating normally, with services available to the members. However, the security service was not present at the gate.
The Eric Holdtman Service Centre is a cherished facility at Tweedy Park, offering pensioners a wide range of activities and services. Named after Eric Holdtman, a prominent figure known for his dedication to the care of the elderly and his significant contributions to the former Brakpan Municipality.
Pensioners receiving a Sassa grant can access membership at the centre for a minimal fee, granting them access to various activities and services and meal discounts prepared by the centre.
The centre also provides basic healthcare services, including general medical check-ups for blood sugar, blood pressure, heart rate, and blood oxygen levels. Additionally, they offer transportation services for collecting chronic medication at hospitals or clinics and assisting pensioners with their clinic cards.
The centre’s library boasts an array of books focusing on Christian literature. Other activities available to members include Bible study, carpet bowling, bingo, exercise activities, and games such as darts, chess, and jigsaw puzzles.
Over the years, the centre has hosted several significant events, including the annual flower show organised by the now-defunct Brakpan Horticultural Society.
